Are the compass points, i.e. N, S, E & W, etc. supposed to be backlit at night?

Compas Points - backlit?
LOL - I thought the compass wasn't working as it rarely showed North. Of course, I just figured out it doesn't show which way is North, it shows which way you're travelling. Duh!
