A couple of Windshield Questions

Post by Van Voyager »

Have a couple of questions about the windshield on my 86.

How do I tell if it's an OEM windshield (I suspect it is)

What is the OEM windshield made of, i.e. Lexan, or Plexiglass?

Is there a way to tell what any particular windshield is made of?

The original windshield is Lexan. Replacement aftermarket are thicker Plastics. Replacement windshields can be ordered with a vent preinstalled, higher or lower and wider widths. I got mine from Clearview. They don't make the windshield till you order it.

Do you guys look through the shield while riding or is your shield adjusted (or modified) so that you can see over it?

Ya, already happened! Seems weird that the beaded water doesn't flow off the windshield better .

I wont ride on foggy mornings purposefully but I have. I have a windshield 2 inches taller than stock on my 1200. Even though moisture accumulated on it I could still easily see through it. I happen to like seeing through the windshield rather than over it as a personal preference. Maybe Louisiana fog is different.

The ideal situation for me would be to have a windshield just tall enough that I can look through it for normal riding but not so tall that I can't pop my head up a bit to look over top when I need to. My current windshield which I suspect is original OEM, is defiantly too tall for popping up to 'looking over'. Admittedly though, I haven't tried lowering it yet - it may be at it's highest setting.

Yesterday, I did manage to lower the windshield about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Not a lot but it might just be low enough - I need a bit of a longer ride to confirm.

Finally got the bike out for a ride today. The lower windshield is definitely an improvement! I can now goose up a bit and see over the top. Still not ideal but workable for now. Before it's time for a new windshield I'll actually take a stab and cutting the one I have now down another 3/4 to an inch or so to see if I can come up with the ideal height (I suppose I could do that with cardboard).

... folks use a small blue painters tape strip to mark their view level and try'
that first... you can see if the mark is intrusive to your vision...

Many Utube howto's on how to cut a shield... done it many times... yeah,
the first cut comes with a gulp.....

BTW,use painters tape so the glue won't much up your shield.......
Strong glue will destroy plastic...
