Bought my first Vintage motorcycle...

Post by David (N. Alabama) »

1975 Kawasaki KT250 trials bike. The oldest bike I have ever owned was from 1977, but it was only 4 years old when I bought it.

I got to be an assistant vintage trials section judge at last fall's Vintage Days at Barber Motorsports Park. A buddy of mine that lives close, and went to the event with me, ended up buying a vintage trials bike last fall. He has since built period authentic trials sections on his property. I rode his Yamaha TY250 and was hooked. Of course I had to have a Kawasaki.

I saw this KT250 at the Vintage days and was able to get this great shot with the Yamaha and Honda bikes.

Here is the one I bought:

Here it is with a comparison shot of my KLX250S

Maybe one day I will be able to do this on it. Don't think so. ;-)

Well now you probably have a complete set. I think trials was the only type bike you didn't have in the stable. Congrats!

If you shopped Ebay you could probably find the W650 somewhere. It isn't a bad substitute.

Drag up an old thread...I have a 2 stroke 1976 KT250. Mine has the optional factory comfort seat and forward relocated foot pegs.
Oklahoma is one of the easiest states in the nation to tag an off- road motorcycle. All you need is a clean vin. # and odmeter.
That will get you a tag with a black decal. If the bike was originally bought in Okla., 2004 or earlier you only need a notarized bill
of sale. Okla. didn't title off- road vehicles until 2005. Back in '75/76 the KT250 was a "timed trials bike". Back then the course
was more of a trail with obstacles and check points. You start the course but you don't know where the check points are. That's
where the speedometer/odmeter comes into play. Each rider starts minutes apart. You use the spedo/odmeter so you don't get to the
check point early or late. I don't know this to be fact, a guy that looked at my bike told me that. I couldn't find any rules that support that.
After you get the tag and registration you go to your insurance agent to get insurance. Then you can get the correct color decal.
Then to ride it on the road you must install lights, mirrors, brake light, tag light........Then you will be legal on the road.
I found a vintage 1976 tag and registered it as an antique. I also have a KX500 street tagged.
I'll get it out of the barn and take a few pic's to post. I had a 2006 KLX250, I had Bill Blue of Kansas
do a 351cc big bore kit with a pumper carb on it. It really woke it up. I sold it to a friend 3 years ago.
He's still enjoying it to this day.

This is an old picture but it still looks the same, always kept inside.
Factory comfort seat and the peg re-locators, puts the pegs closer to the
shifter and rear brake.
