Step By Step instructions for Fairing Removal

Post by MaryWard »

Is there any kind of information about removing the Fairing. How many screws, clips, bolts, etc. and where?
I have to get the Left Fairing off to work on a headlight issue.

Headlight dead along with Dash illumination. (never saw a headlight fail indicator, nor can I find anything on the dash that would tell me that).

1992 Voyager XII. Not Cal. I have only had the bike a year (4 months riding).

Will replace headlight, clean connectors, etc.

I have access to a service manual but it does not really cover total failure of headlight, nor does it show how to remove fairing.

Any suggestions or directions?

To get to the headlight just remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the headlight bezel, then carefully lift up from the bottom to "unhook" it frounder to crome windsheild trim, then you will see 4 screws for the headlamp, remove them and then you can pull the headlamp out enough to get to the back and the bulb, you can't take the headlamp all the way out because of the adjustment cable, but you will have lots of room to chang the bulb. But I would start with checking fuses, the fuse block is under the false tank.

I have the headlight out and the bulb is fine. I must have a short or something in the wiring. No dash light or head light (hi or low) nothing. I have to figure out if there is power going to the headlight.

novice at electrical, well less than novice, I have a meter to check, but wondering about the wires. Black/yellow, Red/black and Red/yellow. Sigh.

I suggest you email Carl Leo at voyagerparts@bellsouth.net with specific symptoms and start a dialog. Nobody and I mean NOBODY knows more about the Voyager XII than he does.

Try this, start the bike on the center stand, turn the bars all the way to the left and right, see if it comes on and off, with the false tank off, look and the wiring harness where it come up the right side of the frame going to under the bars, if there is a tie wrap there cut it off, this is a common problem area that in time can break a wire in that harness, even if it's not the problem cut that tie off, then check the connectors anywhere you see one, unplug them and clean them with a elect. cleaner spray, then get some dialectical grease, (auto supply stores should have both cleaner and grease) There is a white connector off the fuse block that has caused this type of problem before. Some one will chime in that has had it happen to and be able to tell you the one it is. Have you checked the fuses? Start at the simple stuff and go form there. And as said, call Carl, he can fix XII's over the phone with mental waves, I've seen it first hand. :oh:

I have gotten the fairing off with a little Luck. And a lot of swearing. LOL

Now I have to locate the stupid headlight relay. I am guessing this is my issue, no headllight or dash light. so it is not the stupid reserve lighting doo-hickey I am guessing. But can't locate the stupid headlight relay.

My head hurts. Off to dinner. Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Mary, there is a large white plug connector in left side of fairing. Check that thing first for a burned connection inside it. Its location is to the left side of battery but inside left fairing cover. Then let us know if that is it if not we will go on from there. If it is the problem you will need to rewire around white connector the affected wires. I think a white wire but I'm not sure on the memory of wire color and there could be more wires affected if corrosion is the culprit. Corrosion will not carry an amp load and the wire connector melts as a result.
Headlight relay is just at the left side of the battery there are three little round relays in a row on frame rail it is one of them. Wish I knew which one for you but I am not where I have my manual. They are for starter, headlight, and I think maybe fuel pump.

Mary, I also despised pulling fairing sides of my bike, it was one of the worst jobs I could be doing to the bike. But I found my secret to fairing side removal happiness. I can now do it in a few minutes and put it right back on.
Here's what I do- if only one side needs removed:

pull headlight ring cover
pull turn signal light and unplug
pull lower fairing extension
pull both mirrors
pull long chrome cover under mirrors
(here's the time saver)
take out only the bolts and screws from the half of the windshield on the HALF or SIDE you are removing the fairing cover from. So you will be leaving the windshield intact but only half mounted. My windshield will bend enough to remove and re-install fairing side you are working on.
This makes it super easy for me because windshield does not have to remounted and be adjusted and tweaked. not to mention get scratched or damaged or knocked over in garage. Mike

Check the wires coming from the key switch (ignition) about 3-6 inches down there is a tie-wrap and the wires at that spot break you need to fix those wires anyway cut the wires where the tie-wrap was and add 6" of wire to all the wires and when you put back together don't tie-wrap tight leave wires where they can move when you move the handle bars
