There is a non-profit organization called Mother Road Ride Rally that sponsors a Route 66 ride from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA every June. This year it is June 14-22. I rode it in 2011 and they had about 80 bikes of all types and people from all over the US and Canada. It was a great ride. See link below:

Thanks for that link joerod, I always wanted to plan a ride like that , being in a group of all different bikes would be great. Wont happen this year as I already have my ridin season itinerary made. I notice that you are from VA. after getting to CA. did you turn around and ride back on 66 ? take a completely different route? Sell the bike and fly back  ? ....... just curious,(and also need to start thinking about a plan)......................................tony :-D

Tony,

I rode from VA to Chicago with 3 other local riders. Downtown Chicago is the official start point of the old Route 66 so we started from there with about 80 bikes and a police escort to get us out of downtown. Each day we rode about 300-350 miles allowing time to stop and visit various Route 66 landmarks. You can either ride with the larger group or split off in smaller groups and rally at the end of day hotel where everyone stays. We crossed the Mississippi river on the old Route 66 Chain Rock Bridge (now closed to the public). It was a great ride and opportunity to meet lots of wonderful people. We visited the Will Rogers Museum in OK and also rode thru the Painted Forest and Petrified Forest. Once you get to Santa Monica everyone is on their own to get home. Most travel home in small groups. I headed back through Vegas and then down to the Grand Canyon visiting both the North and South Rim, then down to Texas and back to VA. 7,000 miles and 22 states in all. Highly recommend it. Many folks are repeat riders and some do the ride every year. It's the second best ride I've done next to the Italian and Austrian Alps in Europe.

One other thing...It's best to have a battle buddy to ride with. My battle buddy was from Arizona and we linked up in Chicago. We roomed together and split the cost of lodging otherwise it can be a bit expensive. The MRRR provides a listing of people who want to do this.

When you're ready to do it let me know and maybe I'll be able to go with you. My wife is not keen on riding. My daughter was my riding partner but now she's grown, married, has a baby and lives 1500 miles away. Ah...such is life!
