Other RATTLE sources ... what I found.

Post by NSASarge »

1. First place loudest rattle came from the lower louver shutters.
THE FIX: Place a 3/4" x 3/4" x 2" piece of high density foam under the lower shutter pivot point just forward of the pivot. You can do this easily by pulling the small cotter pin out of the pivot pin and flexing the shutter enough to give you more room. Make sure the area where you stick this foam block is clean and dry. Re-install the shutter and cotter pin.

2. Second place rattle goes to the trim ring around the ignition switch. The trim ring is not attached to the plastic chromed tank trim. It is actually attached to the ignition surround. The rattle noise is the trim ring against the chromed tank trim.
THE FIX: You can "tighten" the trim ring by popping the trim ring free from the ignition surround by carefully prying the trim ring up with a thin plastic putty knife/scraper. Just remember, you are prying against the plastic chromed tank trim! ! BE CAREFUL! ! Use several layers of plastic electrical tape or try some thin foam tape around the contacting surfaces of the ring or chromed tank trim. This is gonna make it more difficult to remove next time, but the rattle will be gone. OR you can simply place some clear tape on top of the trim ring and the chromed tank trim. (Tape the ring to the tank trim.)

3. Third place rattle goes to the faring storage compartment doors.
THE FIX: Open the compartment doors. Use a pair of slip joint pliers to loosen the locking ring on the inside of the door that holds the key lock in place. Remove the key lock from the door. Place the end of the locking "TAB" in a vice and GENTLY tap the upper metal part of the TAB so that it will pull the door more snugly when the key is turned. You only need to bend this a tiny amount. If you make it too tight, just tap it back the other way. It doesn't take much to snug the door up. Re-install the lock and ring. You can also place some foam tape around the door to snug it up.

Hope this helps some of you. (Drives me NUTZ!)
