New Battery For My Voyager 1700

The new battery on the left check the two spacers under the battery. These were included in the box with the battery. Shorai 3# and old lead acid 16#.

After four years and 99,000 miles, on a 41 degree morning the starter just started my Voyager. So when I got home, I started looking at batteries. I settled on the Shorai battery, this is a feather weight battery. Buyin was a bit high but saving 15 lbs was worth it. Removing the old battery was the normal chore, but when it came time to install the Shorai it was a breeze. At 3 lbs it felt like a paper weight. I also bought the Shorai battery charger that was $72.00 but I'll continue using the Shorai on both the Voyager and the Goldwing trike. I did have to grind both the Shorai battery terms. They were about a 1/8" larger then the Voyager 1700 battery cable ends.

My Moto Guzzi came with one. No need for a charger. I start it up and go for a ride once a month and in 15 months it has started with no issue.

I saw one of these batteries at a show one time,i thought it was just a casing of a battery,it was so light!!please keep us informed as to how it performs in cold weather start ups,etc..I would hope they last twice as long as a standard agm battery, they are expensive..

If this is a lithium battery and I am betting it is, Don don't allow this battery to drain down to 10% or less or this will become a lightweight paperweight.

Well, on March 28, Trisha and I were going for a ride. Trisha on her trike (gold wing 1800) and to our surprise the new Shorai battery I had installed was dead! I had the special Shorai battery charger and it took a long time to charge. Since, I've checked to see if there was a draw on the battery all was ok. It's been three weeks since I put the Shorai battery back into the gold wing. tomorrow I'll check the voltage on the battery.

Cold weather: On my trip to Austin, TX I took the I 80 route through Wyoming. One night I stopped in Rock Springs, Wyo. When I got ready to leave the next morning the temp was 30 degrees. I was told that for cold weather starts. Turn on the Ign and power the fog lights for 30 seconds, putting a load on the battery. Which start the chemical reaction in the battery. I then waited a minute before trying to start the 1700. When I did push the start button the engine turned over like it was a 70 degree day.
