Charging system capacity

Post by Steverides5 »

Looking at the spec manuals doesn't seem to give me my answer.

My wife and I both own full sets of Gerbing heated gear. Using Gerbings chart we are told to use a 20A fuse for each set. Times 2 sets is a maximum load of 40A. I really doubt that both of us would even consider ramping up the gear settings to maximum. However the question is could the bikes alternator handle this plus the other things it always is expected to power.

All the alternator specs are rated at a minimum of 4000-5000 RPM. We all know we never ride at that RPM for any sustained length.

Thanks in advance. Steve G

Steve
I've never had a problem with my heated gear. I had a 65w liner with heated gloves, I used when we were on our Alaska trip. I was pulling a trailer, at 60 mph, revs 1900 or so. I had fog lights on, Heated grips on, heated seat on, plus the liner and gloves. I rode all day without problems. Most time my temp control is set between 50 to 60%.
I bought a new liner and gloves from Gerbing just after that trip. The liner is max 77 watts and the gloves max 13.5 watt draw. Still no problems the the charging.
One thing is I DID NOT CONNECT STRAIGHT TO THE BATTERY. I used the extra ACC conntector, near the radio.

Thanks Don, we have been using both suits with no issues. I think I'm going to install some type of volt meter. If the system is overloaded the voltage will drop. Short of a proper math calculation I guess that's as dependable as anything.
