My first thought is fuel pump.
Can you hear the pump when you turn the key on?
I had a similiar problem many years ago and found the Start relay had gone bad. I switched it with the headlight relay and got the bike home.
Not sure about the grinding noise.

Is it turning over at the proper speed,as if the battery is up to proper voltage? If the battery voltage is low, that could account for starter relay pulsing in and out, making a buzzing sound, and also not giving enough voltage to start the engine. :hmm:

1st suggestion: Sounds like one or more of your injectors is stuck partially open, causing it to flood on start, requiring a wider throttle position for extra air to compensate. Does it blow black smoke when i first fires up like that? Leaking injectors is a fairly common problem with 1300s that have sat a while. Running a heavy dose of Seafoam in the fuel usually helps this issue after two or three tanks of fuel.

2nd suggestion: A more far fetched cause would be if the TPS has been moved and not correctly reset, it will tell the DFI controller the wrong amount (like, NONE) of fuel until you crank the throttle open enough to tell it to feed more fuel, but that would also mean it should be running very lean when riding.

3rd suggestion: These fuel injection systems use a separate engine temp sensor to tell the DFI whether or not to increase fuel delivery for cold start. Your sensor could be faulty. I used to know what to look for from the sensor at cold, and then when hot, but I forget right now.

Sometimes it boils down to going step-by-step through each system and check for weaknesses. On these older bikes a string of partial failures can build into a poor running engine.
