Speedo cable replacement

Post by joerod777 »

I'm replacing the speedometer cable on my 2003 Voyager. I've read about lubricating the new cable with a lithium grease or a speedometer cable grease. Do I also need to apply any grease or other lubricant in the front wheel gearbox where the cable connects? Thanks in advance for your help!

I would. I have. Speedo cables spin at high speed, a good lithium spray on grease has worked for me. Definitely lubricate the gear drive on the wheel.

Went that way a couple of times, with lyth' and regular grease. Didn't seem to make much difference. I still needed new after around 35K to 40K. The present one (without greasing) has been there for over 45K. When I looked at it while changing the front tire it looked just fine. One thing I have noticed is the cable lasts longer if you have it routed 'outside' the forks.

Every 15000 mile take off clean tube and cable, relube put it back on...the tight curves to the pickup are hard on-em,and long term storage. all the different greeses tend to harden or wear out pending many factors...as they say ounce of prevention {maintenace}...... also pending weather and
climate keep check at bottom of cable for water build up. lilabner. :hmm:

Absolutely, periodic maintenance is necessary on all cables including speedometer cables. Bikes with clutch and brake cables need periodic lubrication as well. Maintenance is just part of owning a motorcycle.

Installed new speedo cable today. Everything works fine. I also put shrink wrap over the cable sleeve to keep water out. Thanks for all the advice!
