fotos- rear wheel XII, do these look 'normal' - some oil....

Post by Grumpy »

These are photos from my 2003 XII, with about 47K miles on it. I'm just wondering if these are 'normal' looking, or is there a problem apparent?
There is a thin coating of oil that radiates out from the hub, covering the disk with the holes in it, and as you can see on the tire, on a long ride (SantaFe) it will eventually gets onto the tire. If I stay away from synthetic gear oil, this is lessened, but still does occur. Is this something "to live with" or is there a seal I can replace without too much fuss?

Also - is there any maintenance to do on whatever is on the other side of that disk with the holes in it? (It looks pretty dusty in there.) I tried to take a peek: The retaining ring easily comes out, but nothing else budged.

Note - on both photos, the slight color directly down from the axle-hole is a very light fluid- there was just a dribble - I'm not sure if it was water/maybe condensation, or what. It certainly wasn't 80/90 wt oil.

Bob,

In your top photo: I have noticed this before on mine, but it was from the grease that was on the hub "teeth". I do not notice any oil, but the streaks from the grease are usually present on mine, maybe not as much as yours though.

On the other side of that "disc" is your rubber cush drive. There is usually nothing to do there maintenance wise, unless the rubber gets hard or for some reason is badly deformed or ripped etc. Usually, these are not a problem.

I've never noticed any oil or otherwise on the part in your bottom photo on my Voyager.

Thanks Gary, Just before finding your post, I'd dropped my tire off to my local bike repair shop, and Mark said the same thing you just did. Good News for a change*. He added that the heat on the gears can get high, and some of the gear grease may liquify & run to the outside of the wheel. - Say, what grease is recommended? And is there a 'better' one? I don't recall what the post was about, but I do recall that someone on the AVA said they're using a hi-temp Plumbers grease....
.
*my recent bad news - my dental insurance won't cover the crown I now need (a tooth literally just fell out !) - that'll be about a $2000 bill when all is done. hahaha, at least it won't affect my riding !

Grumpy that's exactly what happened to my bike. I used probably too much bearing grease on the splines and I nearly freaked out when I discovered what looked initially like oil all over my gear case and tire. After I cleaned it up and checked the fluid in the differential, I compared the level and color of the fluid and realized (mostly after posting here) that it was indeed the liquified grease.

Running around NM can be pretty warm. The grease on the splines was probably too light. Use a grease rated for disc brakes when you put it back together. The streaking on the hub is normal, but I have never seen it reach out to the wheel and tire before.

I am sure either brand is sufficient, however, I always choose a waterproof grease when I have a choice.

As far as grease goes, I use the XPR Seadoo multipurpose. It was recommended to me by the cycle shop, it has worked well, it is high heat, and waterproof.

I use Moly grease on mine. Got it at a Honda shop. I believe that is what the manual calls for.

Son of a gun! I just found a small tube of Honda Moly lube in the garage. The type of tube that goes into those small hand-held grease guns. Thanks.
