Loss of #2 & 3 cylinders

Post by Gator Mike »

After installing the engine I've put about 100 miles on the bike. Yestarday I took a 20 mile trip and on the way back it appeared to loose a couple of cylinders. Determined it was #2 & 3 but it was intermittent. Drained the carbs and all had gas (no water). Sounded like the coil for those two cylinders so I had a spare and changed it. (If you haven't done that before--lets just say it's a trip). Any way when I got the bike back together it started and ran fine on the center stand. Rocked it off the center stand and all of a sudden problem reapeared. Put it back on center stand with engine running poorly and the second it came up on stand the engine ran great. Did it several times. Sounds like something is shorting out with the weight of the bike or possibly stretching a harness. Guess all the tupper ware is coming off again and I start checking wiring. :bat: This may be one of the few times I wish it didn't have a fairing. ......And the story continues....Gator Mike

Man, I know what you mean Mike!?
And with an intermittent problem like that...where do you start?

Just thinking(I know dangerous), I can't think of any wires for the ignition near the center stand?
How about a ground...

I could be off, I really don't know my XII that well yet. Let us know what you find. :thk:

Finally got a chance to look at the problem today. Found that on the center stand or on the side stand the problem went away. Since I was loosing 3 & 4 I started tracing wires from that coil and finally found the problem. Would you believe that while I was putting the engine back in the bike "someone" sneaked into the shop and put the pick up coil harness under the engine guard so that when I tightened the guard down it eventually chaffed the wires..... Or maybe I'm an idiot and did it my self. Any way I removed the harness from under the guard, repaired the wires and now she runs fantastic. Aparently with weight on the bike, the engine pulled enough on the wire to short it but on the center stand it took the weight off the engine and the stress on the wires. All is well in the "Gator house". Thanks for all the input........Gator Mike
