Hey TaiwanJohn, is that 45 MPH or 45 miles driving?
I think that would be more of an RPM thing than MPH or miles travelled.

That would be 45mph.
It has been covered before, but the stock alternator has a 35amp max output, which is about 420 watts. That's a peak output at around 4500rpm??? It doesn't make that at idle nor at 3500rpm which is about an 80mph cruise. It does however make enough power to run headlights of 210 watts = 100+55+55, and the rest of the bike's standard lighting.

The 55 amp alternators make more peak power, but actually produce less power at low engine speeds. Changing light bulbs to LEDs could save you more power.

If you are looking for better vision, buy quality lights, not POS lights from Checker, or WallyWorld. Try the Hellas, they work great, and are great value. Quality lights have better beam control, and keep the light where you want it. The FF50s and Micro DEs are great lights from Hella.

Rusty, You said you have running lights and fog lights on your Voyager. What kind do you have?

I went with Hella FF50's, both fog and running. I decided to get the same for both to try to keep symmetry to the bike, except of course the big goofy looking bump on top of the seat.

So you have a total of 4 extra lights on your bike, 2-fog and 2-running? Where are these mounted? Can you post a picture of your rig? I know I ask alot. Thanks

You all can pull up FMVSS 108 Full text and it will tell you what lights are required and why. Most states have adopted the FMVSS 108. I know Georgia has and I am one of the ones that enforces it. Most aftermarket items will have on the boxes for "For Off Road and Show Use Only". Happy riding.

So, are you saying that you can tell just by looking at the light output whether the light is 'legal' or not?
The previous owner put HID lights on my KLR650, and I can't even run the high beam because it is too bright. I think both lights are pointed too high also. I am still waiting on the backordered service manual from Carl Leo so I can see where to adjust the lights (if they are adjustable).

Bob I'll try to post a picture if I can find the camera and figure it out. We just moved, and everything is lost!

Bob, please excuse the dirt, bugs and scrapes. Still working on replacing previous owners booboo's. The bike didn't know it was getting it's picture taken today, so she didn't get a bath yet. Pretty grimy due to riding on wet roads.

No one can tell by looking at the lights. However, the package would state it.

Hi all....

I'm late on my different tests and projects with the lighting issue....

I wanted to try the H4ST Silverstar and the Philips Vision+80 X-treme H4 Bulbs (PH-102) before trying the HID H4 conversion kit.

I just came back from running around with the Philips and can say it's not too bad. Low beam is ok, high beam is very good. The Silverstar didn't seem to do much versus the stock H4 bulb I had in there. I have a Silverstar in my Concours and it works much better in there versus the Voyager. Maybe the reflector is different????....who knows....

I am going to try the HID system later this week. On the upcoming trip I'm taking I'd prefer to have a TON of lighting. Oh, and I switched out the last marker lights to LED and the trunk light! The trunk light just made sense in the event the switch ever gets stuck it won't run the battery down.

I do have a pair of PIAA 35w driving lights that may end up on here as well. With the conversion to LED's I should have plenty of power....

More to follow...

I haven't got to the HID conversion. In the midst of all this I sold 2 bikes, bought another one (VTX1800R), traded it in on a new VTX1300R, made 2 more offers on bikes, setup 2 large aquariums, had to work, take care of the wife(honey do's)....anyway... I think you see what I mean! :gig:

But, I will say this, I have moved the box closer to the bikes!

I'm hoping this week offers some free time to check it out.
