Identification by year/model/colour.

Post by madmax »

Hi, does anyone know of a list for the 1200. The web site http://www.abbikeboard.com/year/year.html no longer works.
It would be a handy way of making sure the bike you buy is what it says it is.
Over here in the UK a bike may have a newer registration number than the year manufactured. A seller may say it’s a 97 as that was the date it was registered on arrival here. It could be 5 years older. It would be handy for your international followers/members.

With the caveat that XII didn't really change much over it's lifespan.

Not what you're looking for, but https://www.amervoyassoc.org/forum/view ... 337#p91337 skims over some of the more relevant mechanical changes, with some links that get into more detail. The first model ('86) was the most different, and I identify it by not having cruise control. After that, parts are largely interchangeable.

Others here know about the paint colors (as you asked about), which is the one thing that changed each model year. (I painted my bike and don't have a clue about these colors.) Other than than, I've googled the VIN -- AFAIK the only other thing clearly tied to the different model years.

Maybe more useful is some guidance for finding out whether the mileage is accurate -- i.e., whether the odometer turned over. These bikes can rack up high mileage. I had some questions about that which I resolved by identifying whether the forks had prior service and their wear seemed consistent with the odometer. (I think my odometer is accurate and my bike was just beat to she-it mostly by weathering outside storage.)

Hi Nails, Thanks for the reply. The link you gave was very interesting. But a simple list of Colour /Year/ Model /Colour pictures would be ideal. I’ve noticed a few times on eBay (UK), dealers & people selling 1200’s that are not correct colours for the year. When I questioned the seller’s, the advert disappears. With these bikes not being a UK model very few people here would know about them. I keep my eyes open for any 1200’s as I have one, So If anyone out there has a list or can make one up. That would be magic.

Scams, perhaps just phishing for valid contacts to sell. By any chance SmartCycleGuide?

Couple of things I noticed. First, the colors stated are the author's description of the colors, not the name of the colors. So useful for just figuring out what year a bike is, but not for ordering paint. For instance, 2000 he calls "Blue (Silver Blue) / Silver" when it's actually um... something like Galaxy Gray and Cosmic Silver dang I forget the actual color names. On top of that I've seen two different "official" names for the gray used in 2000. I also noticed that the last post was 10 years ago.

Your right. The color description is a little off. For instance 1996-1997 is red with metallic black inserts not red. 2002 is more burgundy with silver inserts.

Hi everyone, Thanks for the Info supplied. Most useful. Just to show you what I was on about. Take a look at this eBay advert.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404312873849
Bike looks nice but it’s not the right year. Registration plate & color indicates a 91 bike. But being advertised as a 96 model. I informed eBay, but they have done nothing. Good luck to anyone that buys it.

Another way of telling it's not a '96 is the seat. I believe it was in '96 that they changed it to the later flatter style.
