Hello everyone! As of today, we have 90 registered! That's going to be a great turn out!
Just a reminder that rally registration closes on May 9 so that we can place our t-shirt order for the rally.
If you are coming, but have not sent in your registration, do it TODAY or TOMORROW!
After that, we will not accept any orders for t-shirts. We order a few extra of the most common sizes for the rally. You can only get what is available.
Have you all made your hotel reservations? If not, do it NOW! If our blocked rooms are full at Laquinta Inn, you'll have to find other lodging.
See you all soon!

Fork head shake at low speeds
My '94 has a tendency at speeds around 40 and below to begin shimmy of the front end. If I let go of the bars, it starts and probably would progress into tank banging quickly. I installed new Dunlops and used Dyna-Beads for balance. Anyone have this problem? Also, I notice when I'm straight and level, my handlebars are slightly off of straight ahead using the fairing as a reference.
First, is the shimmy normal and second, how do I straighten the bars. I'm sure it's a simple loosening of the triple tree clamps and re positioning, but I need some guidance.
Thanks, all..

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
First, make sure the steering stem bearings are torqued to 95 inch pounds and the front tire pressure is 34-38 pounds(I like 34).You did not mention what Dunlop you use(I hope not the 404).Are your front wheel bearings good?Let us know the results.

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
Just a thought, Are the top bars adjusted evenly, (Do the hatchmarks and grooves line up where the top bars connect to the bottom bars.??
If lined up then you may need to check to see if shocks are even. Loosen upper & lower tree pinch bolts & axel bolts and align so everything is even, using benchmark measurements. If it is the bars bent they can be straighten fairly easy.

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
I think the solution is what Doug suggested. Loosen the pinch bolts and make sure everything is lined up. The bike fell over on the one side and I'm sure the bar hit the asphalt.
I have Dunlop E3 Elites. Not 404's.
After all that I'll check and see if that helps.
Thanks.

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
At about 30K miles, this started in my 2000 also, and Wyzard's (R.I.P.) got me to try the steering stem fix (apparently bearing seats were not fully seated, or painted first and paint wore out. or ??? - it was a pretty common complaint or worry when XIIs were new.cushman eagle wrote:First, make sure the steering stem bearings are torqued to 95 inch pounds and the front tire pressure is 34-38 pounds(I like 34).You did not mention what Dunlop you use(I hope not the 404).Are your front wheel bearings good?Let us know the results.

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
Wobble problems are common in large touring bikes. The 1800 Goldwing can have a wobble to. Many wing owners change the bearings out
Eliminate potential cause and you can fix it.

Re: Fork head shake at low speeds
My '94 only has 7200 miles on it since new, so bearings aren't the problem. I'm going to loosen the pinch clamps and axle and realign the front wheel to the back with 2X's, then re-tighten everything to spec.
