Progressive spring install

I am planning to install progressive springs on my 2000 XII. I have reviewed this forum plus the instructions on abikerboard. Looks do-able. I plan on doing the swap with the forks on the bike and use a faucet handle puller. I have a question to get me started. How to theblack plastic caps come off? Do you just pry them with a screwdriver?

Here's another tip: After draining the old oil out of the forks, spray starting fluid into the tube until it runs clear out the bottom. You'd be surprised how much of the old oil is still in the tubes. But don't do this while you are smoking!

I remember a post about which way to insert the new spring and how it affected performance but I don't remember what was said. May not have affected performance but you could hear the spring compress if the tight wind was on top or quieter with the tight end on the bottom. Does anyone remember this or am I just getting foggy.

Put the tightly wound coils down for less spring noise. I did this upgrade two years ago and it's been a world of difference since then. New oil does wonders too and I used 15 weight....very happy with the results.

Yes. I agree. I do not plan on removing the forks. I was asking about the best way to remove the retaining ring inside the top of the tube. Do you use a pair of needle nose pliers or a screw driver?

Small screw driver will do the trick. I have a small set of hook & picks from Stanley that I found to work well.

Agreed..... way too much work using the Schill method. I made a post called
"air no more " Jan.24th 2014. under general voyager XII.....took under a hour.after making the tool to depress the top fork caps..........a small pick type tool will get the circlips out easily ,after the pressure is released.....................

The advantage of removing the forks is you check everything out, Bearings, bolts on the triple tree, Brake pads, Speedometer drive, Etc.
It's also a lot easier to work on the tubes out of the bike and they come out fairly easy.
You should be able to do the springs with the tubes off the bike in an 1-1/2 hr., first time maybe a little longer.
When I clean out the tubes I use mineral spirits it is not as flammable and with the tubes off the bike you can get more of the gunk out.
