Need help with erratic speedometer

Post by jpmisco »

I'm a new member, and have a 96 XII. My speedometer sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, or jumps around erratically. I had a dealer replace the tires in the fall, and our first ride this spring, the speedometer started acting up. I found where the cable connects to the wheel somewhat loose,so I tightened it, and it didn't seem to help. I pulled the cable end out, and it doesn't seem to be damaged, and the problem is getting progressively worse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The problem may be in the speedo gear in the wheel. It may not be meshed with the wheel correctly. Do a search on the subject. It comes up from time to time.

Three things to check:

1. The item that turns the speedometer gear housing on the front tire. It is a piece of metal with tangs that connects with the front wheel and turns the speedometer gear housing. Make sure it is not broken or badly worn. This item is usually not the cause.
2. Speedometer gear housing. The gears inside go dry and strip out because of water that will get in there. Best solution is to replace this.
3. Speedometer cable. Pull the cable completely out of the housing by the front wheel, inspect it. If it is broken, or frayed, replace the speedometer cable. It's best to remove this cable yearly, clean, and grease, then re-install.

If the speedometer cable is OK, then there's a good chance the gears in the speedometer cable is stripped.

Thanks to David, Gary, and the Masked rider on my speedo problem. (speedometer that is) all 3 of you guys helped in the solution. It was the gear housing, and the brass piece that goes between the wheel and housing. I have an old shop manual that explained how to take apart the housing, did so, cleaned and re-lubed, and it now works good as new. Thanks again. :bowdn:
