Ken, the ZN1300's are fuel injected, so no jets to worry about. The controller monitors enough stuff to know how much to compensate for.

Of course, doesn't do any good to ask why the ZG1200 isn't injected. (mod kit anyone????).

I was looking at the DFI control wiring diagram and also at a set of injectors for the ZN1300. First, the injector assembly can be split into three two-port sets. They are connected by a small L-shaped bar, and the butterflies are sync'd by adjustable screws between each pair. It would be really easy to remove one pair of injectors and bodies. Of course, the fuel rail would also have to be cut shorter and capped off.

As for the control unit, it looks at the main ignition switch, the starter system, controls the fuel pump, and looks at a throttle position sensor, and air and water temps. It also looks at the inputs to the ignition coils for engine speed. Everything in that system, except the ignition coils, is non-4/6 cylinder concerned. All of the injectors get the same fuel delivery signal at the same time. They are not individually fired!

Since the carbureted 1200 has it's own separate 4-cylinder ignition system, the ignition coil inputs of the DFI unit would need a six-pulse input source off the crank. IN THEORY, all you would need to do is adapt a set of two pairs of the ZN1300's injector bodies, complete with the throttle position sensor, to the 1200 intake runners, then add a water temp and air temp sensor. Add the high pressure fuel pump and wire in the relays for the starter and fuel pump and it should work.

The only thing that would concern me is if the ignition pulses from just two sets of ignition coils instead of three would be enough for the DFI unit to sense engine speed correctly. It could be fooled, but it gets a bit more complicated.

This would be a very interesting modification to try on the 1200! I have the complete DFI system as a spare and would break it apart to try if you want to donate the 1200 to the project. It's a lot more effort than most would be willing to go through! But, lots of fun!

Since the DFI system worked so well on the 1300 six, makes you wonder why Kawasaki never used it on the 1200.

....So the beast project is moving forward, the front progressive springs are in,the rears have not arrived yet , I spent alot of time,some weeks ago with the tech support guy at progressive and was referred to him when I placed my order,cause I looked at the "dollar 4 dollar" section of this forum for the correct part# of the rears and was told they would "probably fit"but were incorrect. So the guy at progressive said the ZN 1300 rear shocks were out of stock,and he was gonna make me a set if I did'nt mind waiting.....Well winter has set in and won't be doing any riding anyway so I agreed, and havn't heard back in weeks.

I took the wheels off and put some soak in degreaser on them,then went to the car wash with them and they got a good blasting,Then returned to the shop and spent a hour on each one with a can of spray brake cleaner and a tooth brush to remove the 30 years of road,and get em prepped for paint.
The factory gold will be replaced with black. Here is a picture of one done, and the other is cleaned and ready for paint.



All of the fasteners were looking rusty and showing their age, so....the worst ones were replaced,
and the rest were cleaned on the wire wheel, I poked a bunch of holes in a piece of cardboard to hold alot of fasteners for spraying at once.



The fork lowers are now black and looking much better than before.



Everything is now ready for reassembly ,which I will begin tomorrow morning, taking advantage of the long holiday weekend off of work. Will just keep watchin for the UPS guy to show up with the rear progressive shocks .This is turning into a fun little winter project,unlike that red goldwing project some of you may remember from last winter ! any thoughts ?.....................tony

My thought is I should drop off my XII at your place next fall and see what you can do over the winter. . . . . .

looking good Tony, How is the weather up there. I have finally surrendered to the cold and filled it up yesterday after a very frosty 15 mile ride. I give up, can't wait until spring. Or maybe a 45 deg day
GPS is almost done, waiting on antenna to be shipped to me. Hoping this is a good investment. Other than that the bike is ready to roll. Gene Kap.

....Was surprised to walk out the back door this morning at 7, and it felt so warm out !
I worked on the beast till 10 A and couldn't stand it any longer..... I took the cover and battery tender off of the XII and took off on a long ride by myself west along the Maumee river ,about 55 miles out,and 55 miles back was good enough for me, if it wasn't for the wind increasing steadily, I would have stayed out much longer,but when high winds grab a hold of that xtra tall xtra wide windshield, it about rips the handlebars out of your hands !.....no fun...but it went all the way to 62 degrees here and that weather pattern may be headin your way Gene . So I rode till 12:30 and returned to the beast project for a couple more hours, had enough for this weekend....Now my clean bike is filthy again....but it was worth it !

As for Ron and Loren....I would love to work on your bikes ! ,....but it'll cost ya ....tony

I hear ya Tony, I had good intentions of getting some yard work done. I had ordered the GPS antenna yesterday online from Amazon.com and at 1:00 it arrived, ,,,, So I just had to take the bike out and try it out. It was favorably warm out and not much heavy gear needed to ride about 55 miles round trip. Just to test out the Garmin , ride them when you can.... Gene

....So over the 4 day holiday weekend I got alot of work done on the beast project, I stayed out in the garage pretty much all weekend,other than going out to get my XII filthy for a few hours
Since the beast was already recently painted flat black krinkle finish by the previous owner,I decided to create a paint contrast by doing everything down low with gloss back. While I had everything apart
I looked thru my old bike parts shed and came up with a old style sissy bar to cannibalize and save a few bucks and make my own rider back rest.

So after alot of hours of FUN the 30 year old bike is looking good ! I am calling her done at this point and don't plan on any other modifications fo right now .
I am now waiting for two things ... the rear shocks to be delivered and SPRING TIME WEATHER !

...I hear ya !... The amount of time and money that guy has into that ONE bike is way out of my budget ! I TRY to be a bit more selective when choosing a "next project" !
Occasionally I have even "passed" on a bike that I felt was too far gone.
I know I have a collection of old bikes that are worth little , but I like em !......tony
