Re: 27th International AVA Rally
I already mapquested the route
It looks like Route 75 north out of Toledo to Route 2 in north Michigan to Hurley would be a scenic route to take, and not much longer than going through Chicago.I am hoping we can take this rally in.It would only be two 400 mile days.

Re: 27th International AVA Rally
I'm with you Michael. When are they going to get one down south for us Cajuns?
The bad part is I was at Estes Park two weeks before the rally celebrating our 50th wedding annv. Commitments required us to be back a week later so we couldn't stay for the rally.

Re: 27th International AVA Rally
I have often wondered how it work if we as members could make suggestions as to locations and why we would think it would be a good location. Because we ride many roads and see sights most of us don't. As an example here in Iowa there is maybe one location that would possible make for a good rally, and it would have to be the north eastern corner of the state along the Mississippi river valley. That is about it for a locations in Iowa, as most of the roads are run at an East to West grid pattern with intersections ever mile or so. Oh and most of the scenery is corn and soy bean fields. Now throw in some hog, chicken, and turkey, confinements. There are also cattle feed lots. We also have what is called wind farming. Those are giant wind turbans that produce electricity, and they are around 250 feet tall standing out in the middle of the corn and bean fields. There you have Iowa. Oh and lets not forget about the slow moving farm equipment. Not so much of a problem in mid summer as compared to Spring planting or Fall harvest.
Facts about Iowa
The first AVA rally held was in New Hampton Northeast Iowa
We even have a Pikes Peak Northeast Iowa
Field of Dreams Baseball field Northeast Iowa
Loess Hills Western Iowa
Bridges of Madison county Southern Iowa
Iowa, the only state that has two rivers as borders.
Just to name a few
This is just an example

I know you're just funnin' with us but honestly there are a variety of issues that may prevent someone of us from traveling that distance (health, finances, caring for family members, etc...).Me Again wrote:Oh come on.Straight north for 20 hrs and your there.Only 1400 miles.Mr Jensee wrote:Looks like another one too far to attend.

No matter where you have the rally someone is going to say its to far for them. Just like reunions its very hard to please everyone every time. I know we are going to try to make next years rally. it would be our first one. I also have a friend and his wife on a 1700 that i trying to get them to go.

Re: 27th International AVA Rally
Iowa is a tough sell. I'm an hour north of you, and it is a solid 2 hours any direction to get to something worth seeing. The only thing that comes to mind under an hour would be the Dragoon Trail going north out of Fort Dodge. There's a state park thrown in that is nice. I am in complete agreement about the northeast corner of the state. Hwy. 76 north out of Waukon for the win.Highway Rider wrote:I have often wondered how it work if we as members could make suggestions as to locations and why we would think it would be a good location. Re: 27th International AVA Rally
The Great River Road was a fun ride. The National Motorcycle Museum was a nice stop as well. No location is too far if you REALLY want to be there.
Two states left for me.
The problem with the southern locations in the summer is the heat and humidity. Especially on a touring bike that blocks most cooling wind.

Re: 27th International AVA Rally
Health reasons are my concern making the long trip. About to go on dialysis soon and I expect to have to contend with that every other day for the rest of my life. IF I found some centers enroute it would still be damn inconvenient to have to stop everything to sit in a unit for 4 hrs. at a time.

Michael are you going to be able to do dialysis at home or will it have to be at a center.
We had a friend who was able to do it at home and it really improved his quality of life...........Gator Mike

Most likely a center. I'm exchanging quality of life for quantity at this point....Gator Mike wrote:Michael are you going to be able to do dialysis at home or will it have to be at a center.

Hello Loren ! We are opting for the route that you suggested also. Do not want to go through Chicago.
We are thinking on crossing the Mackinac bridge, and get a room somewhere at the top of lake MI. near the water's edge. Then day two do the west ride thru the U.P. to Hurley.

We planned to ride around lake Michigan to Manitowac area and take the S.S Badger across the lake east to Luddington MI.before summer is over, and now we just may go to Hurley for the heck of it and snoop around a bit. After the 3000 mile ride we just came back from ...this sounds like a pleasant little ride !

How come nobody recommends sunny Florida? If the politicians can see it's importance surely the AVA could at least give it a glance.
