Newbie to x11 UK, Norfolk
Hi, I have sourced one of these beasts and been looking through the forum, can someone direct me to the right bit for non starters.....prob igniter, my story goes like this...I have just bought a 1986 x11. I can't see any part number for the igniters. Sounds like someone rubbed them off according to the posts. This coupled with the fact the engine won't run! I have had it going after a good long session starting it. Even video'd it, I have got new batt, plugs, oil, filter, carbs out, dismantled and replaced, carb cleaner and used a compressor on these bits. Fresh UK fuel. The battery is fully charged, I turn the ignition on, light on, no probs, choke on full, again all cleaned and works. No throttle. I press the start and it just turns, nearly biting! I have had it going and revving. Before I dismantled, it would start but not Rev. I thought carb issue and sorted that. If the igniters are knackered should it run at all and would it be rough?
If I do need new igniters how much are they and will any others fit?

If it looks like the number has been wiped off it is the old style igniter and could potentially ruin the engine.The new style has 1248 Stamped into it.The old style 1179 was painted on and some places will rub it off and sell it as a 1248.
You should be able to pick one up on fleabay.
the carbs may be gunked up and need a good cleaning but otherwise they are pretty depenable

The carbs appeared fine when I dismantled them, they are super clean now. I have test the battery, it must be the ignitor. Checking the bay now.....what's inside the ignitor...mine will soon be opened up! Anyone willing to have one shipped to them to see if it's cheaper on the postage if I do a PayPal?

I won't start it now. What does the broken chain sound like? I presume it would sound awful and jam! I have seen the item and messaged the seller. Prior to this I just want to be sure that the chain isn't already broken?.....I presume if it did Rev and turn yesterday it's still ok....any test I can do?

Hi, I had cleaned out the carbs and reassembled. I have tested the float bowls and that's all fine, they dribbled out. The ignitor has no markings at all on it, e cent the Mitsubishi symbol. I did get it running yesterday, I was so happy. It revved and idled awesomely .it did stall out again after a few minutes but reassured me the system is sort of working and that the pistons are performing. I tried again today same problem. The battery is fine, there is fuel. I turn ingnition on, starter motor cranks over but it won't bite and fire......it's so close! After. A few goes it back fires. I've fuel there. I can check the two o/s plugs easily should I see if they are wet? Or how can I test the fuel pump? I could upload a YouTube video if that would help?

Turn key on and momentarily hit start button but don't let it start cranking.
Listen for the fuel pump to run .it kind of sounds like the fuel pump may be bad.It is fixable .

You could also have bad pickup/trigger coils.
Check the big plug that is between the wiring harness and the fuse box sometimes they get corroded also see if the wire tie is still on the wire going to the ignition switch (left side just behind the steering) if it is cut it off, it make the wires bend to hard and they brake.
you may have broken wires there that would explain why it works sometimes and not others.

"HIGH" newbie. How many Km on the odometer. Did you make any progress today? Did you try to start the engine with the choke open for a couple seconds, then choke it. That's how I start mine. If the engine turns over than the starter chain is probably good. If the starter spins but the engine doesn't, then you got big trouble in little Norfolk. If the engine turns over but stops before starting it could be the igniter. On early models the igniter advanced the spark too much and the spark plug would fire early trying to turn the engine backwards against the starter. Not good. The igniter is under the dummy tank on top of the airbox. Replace the igniter. However, since the bike is 29 years old, I would think that has already been replaced. You can access the fuel pump from the right side under the chrome cover. Be careful, it's only plastic. Disconnect the fuel line, aim it in a safe direction and push the starter button and see if it shoots out a steady stream of gas. If not, you will have to clean the points, but that's another thread. Hi, the igniter should be here from Ohio by end of today,, Friday. I have had the bike running the other day, before I was told not too, there is fuel, it's busy leaking slightly on one carb so they will have to come off again. I presume I just unplug and swap from the fresh ignitor, and it should start .....it's only done 40 k and the condition looks like his is true too. I think it sound right about the advance timing, it just wasn't biting and after a minute of trying a great back fire...ie rule there and eventually sparking.

Hi..
Couple of things you need to know about the 86 and how it differs from the 87' on..
the 86 is blessed with a carb primer mechanism..
Sit on the bike on the side or center stand.
Pull in the clutch, Turn on the bike to ign.. Put the bike in 1st gear so the green neutral light goes out and release the clutch.. do not hit the starter and you should hear a initially rapid ticking noise which slows down to a stop .. thats the fuel pump..
If you DONT hear that, then drain some fuel from the float bowls and try again..
If you STILL dont hear it, then you can more or less guarantee the fuel pump isnt working (the clean points on it will fix it) or your fuel filter is blocked.. But as you have it running intermitantly, i would say the fuel pump..
the Engine will turn regardless and despite the -1179 (original '86 ignitior) as long as your battery is good (keep it on a tender), it will start.. A Faulty ignitors are not too common but not impossible.
Pull a plug, rest it on the cylinder head and turn her over.. you should see a spark..
If the starter chain is broken, you t will hear the starter motor just spinning..

Waiting for the ignitor, it's sat in a ups van in Norwich so is likely to be here Monday now. I am just going to sort the leak from the far right carb ( as you sit on the bike) it's only going to be a loose screw as it did leak before I took it apart,.

You may have a stuck float valve in that leaking carb. Depends on where the leak is coming from. I have used a torch cleaning kit that uses fine gauge wires in it, easy to find and cheap at a welding supply, to clean all those tiny holes in the jets without damaging them.

It still won't work. The part is installed. I have now taken off the 1 and 4 hit plug, no spark. Is this a coil problem. How do test the coils. Would both go? Andy

Did you check the wires to the ignition switch to see if they are broken.
also the big plug from the fuse block under the left faring.
That is where I would start looking for the problem.
If everything there is good I would suspect the pickup coils on the right side of the engine under the chrome cover, I am not sure how you can check them I usually just swap them out with a set I know is good.

Ahhhh, the 2 3 no spark. I have taken the body work away the problem has been found...the coil has a split in it.!

A part has been ordered and should be here in a few days. It will give me the excuse to circuit test a few more things. I was then going to change the hot leads but it looks like they have a special screw on the end.....I was going to get slightly longer ones as those that are in there look a little tight...any suggestions as if it's worth it?
