Texting and driving.

Post by Lucasind »

So yet another bike wreck ! This time it hit close to home and heart. My son Brad has a friend "Travis" who was on his way over to our house to hang out. Turning onto our street ,he had his R.H. blinker on going into his turn....when all of a sudden WHAM ! a SUV rear ended him and sent he and the bike flying ! :dm:

Travis called our house, and we flew up to the top of our street to help him in any way that we could.
Upon arriving ,saw a SUV up the curb ,and Travs Buell laying up on the sidewalk.I looked in the SUV,and apparently the two ladys had just left the local Taco Bell,as there was the cell phone on the center console ,and two bags of fast food on the front seat, :hmm: The Paramedics checked him over and he said he did not need to go to the hospital, for just road rash.He was wearing his full face helmet and when his head hit the pavement,it likely saved his life.
The bike has alot of damage, and the frame is dented, Very expensive ! ! labor alone on frame replacement will likely " total" the bike.

Image

Apparently Buell runs small radiators inside the right and left SIDES of the fairing,as I see Anti frz. dripping on the ground and likely cracked one of the radiators. His Dad stopped over and we met and hit it off as friends, he told me not to do any investigating on it,and he would send a truck over to my place and pick the bike up,as it is heading to the local HD shop for a insurance estimate.
Another driver ,not paying attention caused yet another accident. The police cited her.....and she did have a valid insurance policy.....this could have ended way worse !

We had a lot of crashes due to inattention to driving until the son of a local cop was killed in what sounds like an exact duplicate of this accident. Now our cops pull anybody over if they even so much as see a cell phone! Even if the cell phone is on speaker and in a dash holder, they will get a warning. I'm still in hopes that they will implement the technology to notify the police if a cell phone is in operation inside a car that is in motion. That technology is already available, but nobody seems to want it put in place.

I am certainly glad Travis did not get hurt any worse  It seems like more people are driving distracted, :gmad: than those who have their minds on the job at hand :-O. I think i told you what happened to a short term employee we had who could not stay off his phone. :tho:

That is close to home in more ways than one. Glad it turned out as it did. It could have been much worse.
I 2nd all the comments that were made on driving distracted. But this also carries over to people walking and riding bikes distracted as well. In larger, busy cities, people are constantly walking or riding thier bikes into traffic as well.
Wake up people, there is nothing on those darn things that is more important than your life or the lives of the people around you.

I used to see this a lot when I worked on a truck (ambulance) some 20 years ago. A few years ago I was driving a unit, while working extra on my day off, when we were rear ended by a woman in a BMW who was talking on her phone (before texting) and not paying attention to the fact that we had stopped and turning into a Burger King for lunch. If you cant see a ten ton ambulance what chance do you think a rider on a motorcycle have? BTW no damage to our ambulance but thousands were done to her car.

Like I mentioned before, the DMV sent us a letter that if one of our CDL employees get caught with a handheld communication devise it is a $10000 fine for us,so why don't they make it just as unpleasant for those driving smaller vehicles. :tho: The phone calls or texts are not that urgent, that one can not pull off the road to make the call[that is what the DMV suggests for truck drivers] :hmm:

totally agree. It is an addiction of epic porportions these days. I play a game with myself when I'm at a stop light to see how many drivers I see using them as they drive by. The number is staggering.

As we all know....these things take time , So they came with a truck 5 days after the accident, and off it went to the local HD shop for the esitmate. The repairs exceed the worth of the bike,so the bike was deemed "tottalled". however both parties involved had the same insurance company and they are really trying to give Trav the ol' "low ball" payment ! :dm:

He is getting a check...but the amount is not yet determined,so in the mean time,we went out to the local Kawasaki dealer cause Travis has got his eye on the Z1000. The dealer has one still in the crate left over from 2015, My son Brad used to work at this dealership and we remained friends with the owner and staff there...,has agreed to a price of $8500. on the new leftover bike.
Travis was telling me of all of the problems that he has had with his Buell, and all of the money that they had put into it for repairs, and all of the summer riding time that was lost while the bike was "down" in the shop. So his dream of owning a Buell turned out to be more of a nitemare ! I told him to buy a Kawasaki ...."and let the good times roll ! "....................................Tony :-D

I guess that all I can say is...."all's well ,that ends well" ! So ,the insurance co. and Travis came to a suitable agreement... :woohoo:

Here is a picture of Travis , the PROUD owner of his very first KAWASAKI !
2015 Kawasaki Z1000 , ................I asked ,on this day , "did ya take a picture with yur smart phone,of the odometer reading at 9 tenths of a mile ? ? " This is the ONLY time that you will ever see this again ! He said NO ! I didn't even think of it !
We are going out riding this weekend , because it is my son Brad's 22nd birthday ! I am gonna take these young lads out for a long (perhaps painful) ride , trying to reinforce my reasons for forcing them to buy TOURING BIKES ! :devl I hope I get to ride Travs new bike !
Of course ,we would have to trade bikes at some point ( I don't want to ride this machine ,any more than about 25 miles) he just may fall in love with the comfort of my Voyager, and then his new bike will have to take a back seat to COMFORT ! :cry2:
