Mark all the plugs and take lots of pictures especially harness routing. Had mine out for transmission problems and really appreciated the pictures on reassembly. Good luck

Here are the symptoms, most of the time you just hear the starter spin and it does not engage, if you put the bike in gear and rock it back and forth, you can get it to catch occasionally

Have you looked to see what Igniter model your '86 has? if its part number 21119-1179 change it immediately before you do break the starter chain (over-advancing the ignition timing). You want part number 21119-1248

When I put this back together, any recommendations on what to use between the upper and lower cases of the transmission?

Kawasaki recommends the use of "Kawasaki Bond" here.
But I think at $50. a tube you could use another high temp silicone from your local auto parts store would do .

I just checked, and here is the Kawasaki product on amazon for around 20 bucks, cheaper than at bike shops, but this is the small 2.5 oz. tube.

I have used something called (3 bound 1184 liquid gasket) I got it at Off Road Motorsports, A dealer near me.
Any motorcycle shop should have it, I don't think I payed much for it less then $10 for a tube.

I've been using Permatex Ultra Gray RTV, used for things like auto transmission cases. Still seals when spread very thin. Certainly is cheaper than Yamabond. Also works on forming gaskets for model airplane engines and joining lawnmower case halves. :hpdc:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help! I know how to spin wrenches, but I've never torn a motorcycle apart this far. I was surprised by how thin the spring was inside the starter clutch was.
