3d making obsolete parts, my project
I'm working on making obsolete parts. Software, learning curve, 3d printer are in my works. I'd have to back engineering the products. I have the radio cover, maybe this fall I can get the plate it attaches to from someone who can't ride in the winter. In exchange, give 2 remade ones to that person. Also, I'll need to see what else is in high demand that needs to be remade.

Ok, thinking it'll be late summer. The 3d printer and learning curve and I still work all day. I\ll need some input on other items to redo

suggestion for what is probably the most requested unobtainable item (from my own experience) - left saddlebag lid

Re: 3d making obsolete parts, my project
My son-in-law has been doing 3d printing. The printers are capable of printing ABS plastic, but I believe he said it would require a temp controlled room to print it in.
I think he uses something called PLA plastic. It could work as well but it may take a bit of sanding/bondo and of course paint to get the way you want. The amount of labor alone may make it cost prohibitive vs finding something on EBay.

That's just in his signature. I'm curious to see whether this leads to anything tangible.

Re: 3d making obsolete parts, my project
Saddlebag lid would take a large printer or rather fiberglass mold. PLA is a corn based material, will not hold up as a saddlebag lid. ABS is usable material in 3d print.Ya, be easier to find one and repaint it. My signature is gone because I removed tiny pics link . I'm first upgrading my pc to handle rendering (3d imaging).

Re: 3d making obsolete parts, my project
Ok, been awhile. Too many other things had to get done in my life before I invested/researched into the molding process materials/equipment. So, between vacuum pump, pressure pot ( 5 gal size each), materials/equipment, it would exceed my profit on these items. I did however cleaned up 2 lower red lenses, came out very good. Available if anyone is interested.

Re: 3d making obsolete parts, my project
I have an Anycubic Mega X, which has a 12" build plate. If anyone has a piece they need and they can dig up a 3D model of, I can give it a shot. Unfortunately I can't make my own models yet.... I just borrow models off Thingiverse mostly.

A front fender extension would be a great item to print. I am looking for one!

For what it is worth, perhaps someone with wood working ability might be able to come up with something satisfactory. It may not look 100% factory, but at least functional and original. Well sealed wood properly primed paints as well as any surface.

Is this an existing accessory, or just something you're interested in? Also... what would a fender extension be good for? It's it just a decorative thing?

Gene ekap1200 makes stainless steel replacements. I just bolted my trunk down without spacers. So it doesn't slide, so what LOL
