Lay down reset switch?

Post by rongout »

I had the unfortunate mishap to lay down my 1990 VoyagerXII. Minor scrapes on the right side saddle bag, trunk and fairing. Engine looks untouched but the bike will not start. Engine cranks fine but acts like there's no spark. Is there some type of lay down switch that kills the fuel pump and ignition in case of a lay down? If so, where is it located and how do I reset it?

Thank you in advance,

Svengali

Never heard of a lay down switch, nothing in the owners manual. Did the engine stop switch on the right handle bar get moved to off?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Engine switch is in the "run" position but the right handle bar did take a hit. I'll double check the switch. Thanks again!

The only type of switch that would cause that is the kickstand switch, there is when i do believe that will kill the bike if the bike is in gear and the kick stand is still down, maybe that is acting up,loose wire to it ,could have dirty contact etc.

How long did you crank it over.
The fuel probably ran out of the carb's and it will have to crank a wail to get fuel back in the carb's
If the run switch is in the off position and I think if the kick stand switch is not set the starter won't turn.

Before you go tearing into the switch it may NOT be the problem. With the switch off the bike will not even crank. How hard did it hit when it went over. Something might have gotten unplugged when it did.

Thanks for everyone's input. The help is greatly appreciated. Run switch is in the run position and the kickstand safety has been by-passed a long time ago. Under closer exam, the rt engine guard did fold over and impact the round cover on the lower right side of the engine. It put a ding in the outer radius. Guess I will have to look under the cover. I think the coils used to trigger the ignition are under there. Hope the replacement parts are still available.

Check the wires that come out of that cover the guard might have damaged them when it folded over :hmm:

One more item I noticed this weekend... When I toggled the run switch between stop and run, I thought I would hear the electric fuel pump run for a few seconds. I do hear the pump run on my 04 Victory but can't remember absolutely if it is the same on the Voyager. Does anyone know if they can hear the fuel pump run when powering up?

The pump runs when you push the starter button on 1987 and up. I think 1986 is a little different.
To check that it runs pull the plug off of the starter solenoid and push the starter button the starter will not run and you should be able to hear the fuel pump, It will run until the pressure comes up.

From what I remember there is a wire that can get damaged behind the crash bar if it gets folded over, I don't remember what side it is on. I would look in that area between the crash bar and frame.
