Hello everyone! As of today, we have 90 registered! That's going to be a great turn out!
Just a reminder that rally registration closes on May 9 so that we can place our t-shirt order for the rally.
If you are coming, but have not sent in your registration, do it TODAY or TOMORROW!
After that, we will not accept any orders for t-shirts. We order a few extra of the most common sizes for the rally. You can only get what is available.
Have you all made your hotel reservations? If not, do it NOW! If our blocked rooms are full at Laquinta Inn, you'll have to find other lodging.
See you all soon!

airbox snorkels

Post by Nails »

(Gosh, the carbs were a PITA to get off, and they sure are filthy.)

I'm talking about the airbox near the carbs, not the one with the filter. I think it has a lot to do with the nice torque.

And I'm talking about the snorkels that are part of the boots and that extend into the airbox -- I understand their only purpose is to muffle induction noise.

Has anyone cut these snorkels off? I've done that on dirt bikes and got a little more snap, but mostly just a happy noise. (I'm putting different tips on the exhaust, also for more happy noise.) And cutting them off sure would help putting the boots back on.

After a little research I found a lot of sources about noise reduction (or addition, as the case might be). This one adds a possible performance angle: https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Airboxes.html.

This discusses the difference between a snorkel and baffle (https://fz07.org/thread/411/airbox-snorkel?page=4). Start at page 4 -- lots of crap up to then.

Here's a bunch of refereed comments for one particular bike: http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/SnorkelFAQ.htm

For a piggly bike like the XII, I'm pretty sure cutting off the snorkel would have no perceptible change but a new nice noise.

At $44 each (PN 14073B), it just isn't worth the gamble. But if someone had already tried this ...

Oh heck no.
This won't rile the neighbors, but some induction noise sure makes accelerating fun.
Ask anybody with a Cobra ;)
