cruise stopped working

I pulled the handlebars to re-torque the steering head bearing per Don's video and now the cruise control stopped working. I also had the fairing off to find a rattle that was driving me nuts. The cruise was working perfectly before this. This is what I know so far:
-I've checked both front and rear brake cancellation switches. they are clicking and the wires are intact.
-I've cleaned both ends of the harness under the false tank and made sure the bulbs were working.
-My turn signals and radio auto volume are both working, so I believe the distance sensor is working.
-My cruise council power light does light up, so it is getting power to it.
-I adjusted the cable to the cruise module two years ago and has been working great.
-I've tried to make sure when I put the handlebars back on that the wires were not pulled to tight.
-I've ridden the bike down the road and pushed and pulled the wire harness going to the switches on the right handlebar to see if I can manipulate a possible broken wire.

I didn't touch anything else. What am I missing here?

Do you have a shop manual? Not to be discouraging, but here's my story. Four years ago on a trip to the Reno Regional Rally, my cruise stopped working on the first day of the trip. I wasn't able to fix it until I got back home. It turned out that the electronic module with the cables to it had failed. Carl Leo fixed me right up and it's been working great ever since. Since your bike is 3 years newer than mine, perhaps it's an age thing???

Did you check the clutch,and throttle switches? You might have changed the movement of them with your work.I had my clutch switch fail earlier this year,and it showed up with starting issues.

I have not checked the clutch or throttle switches. I've read that they are in the system but I don't know where to look for either of them. I have the manuals and will start testing switches and such today with a volt meter to rule out all that I can. Is there a sure way to test the cruise module without the bike in 5th gear and rolling at 45+ mph?

... a cheap simple volt / ohm meter to see if Ya have voltage or a closed
circuit = continuity, is the troubleshooters great de-liar!!!!! Without
one, you're just guessing.... Best to Ya!!!!

Two questions now.
1. I think I found the carb switch nestled between the two center bowls. I'm assuming that it is connected to the throttle cable linkage and should open and close while moving the throttle. this switch is showing closed constantly, while rolling the throttle open and closed. So either I'm wrong about how to operate this switch or it is bad. If it is bad and needs to be in the open position to operate the cruise, can I simply leave the wire connector unplugged to open that circuit? Or will this have another issue down the line somewhere?

2.when you say "clutch switch" are you talking about the switch that is on the left handlebar under the clutch lever? I thought this was the lockout switch. Or is this a dual function switch as it does have 3 wires going to it. I've tested it and found that with the clutch pulled in, every pin combination is open. with the clutch lever out, two of the pins close and the other combinations remain open. Is this proper for that switch function?

I have a trip around Wisconsin planned for middle of next week and would really like to have my cruise if possible.

That throttle switch cancels the cruise when you force the throttle to close a little bit. Mine takes some pressure. (This is how I usually cancel the cruise, rather than reaching for the actual Cancel switch.)

I know that the Cancel (Off) switch is normally closed, push to open. The cruise On switch is the opposite (push to close). I suspect that the throttle switch works like the stand-alone Cancel switch, suggesting that your throttle switch is not the culprit.

Took the bike for a quick test ride with the wire to the carb switch unplugged and it still did not work.

When you say you use the throttle to cancel and that you have to close the throttle a little. Do you mean that while the cruise is set and operating, it only takes a bit for decel throttle rotation to cancel or you have to push the throttle all the way down to the stop at the idle position. Can't believe you would do that at speed just to cancel the cruise.

On my bike you do close throttle all the way to idle to cancel the cruise, when it is working. Takes a little effort to do it that way. It is much easier to touch brakes to cancel cruise.

Mine just needs a nudge to cancel. But it's a firm nudge.

Can't believe you would do that at speed just to cancel the cruise.

Well, like, the only time I cancel the cruise is when I'm no longer "at speed". I'll use the brakes if I actually need them.

Just got back from my ride in Wisconsin this past week and may have found another piece of the puzzle. My auto cancel on the turn signals quit working while on the ride. I had just replaced and repaired them with parts from Carl Leo. Have not had time to investigate this new development yet, but it will be curious to see if the new parts are fried again. this may point to a short in the system somewhere and causing both issues now. The radio auto volume still operates so I still believe my distance sensor is working.
