If you are coming, but have not sent in your registration, do it TODAY or TOMORROW!
After that, we will not accept any orders for t-shirts. We order a few extra of the most common sizes for the rally. You can only get what is available.
Have you all made your hotel reservations? If not, do it NOW! If our blocked rooms are full at Laquinta Inn, you'll have to find other lodging.

Blah! I do see Gertrude gets an air filter post talks about an OEM one, but no link... Any idea if an OEM or even better a k&n type is available? I have not taken a look at my filter but the bike is a 2002 model with 45k miles and when I bought it orig owner said never replaced air filter so it might be time to help it breathe better - especially in Vegas with 110 to 120 summer temps coming up - more airflow cannot hurt
Any ideas where I can get it - and is it easy to change out? Anyone attempted this before - did search again on replacing it do not see many people talking about how and where (I can figure it out - follow the tunnels from holes in front) - but if u have attempted this is it fairly easy
Maybe it will be ok as i'm at only 45k miles and does not need changing?? IDFK, the service manual does not talk much about when to replace air filter - or maybe I was not reading it fully enough?

The filter is available from bikebandit under part number 11013-1137 for $34.85.
To change it,remove the fake tank by remove the 2 screws near the back on both sides,and loosen the 2 thumb nuts near the center on the bottom.Rest the fake tank on the seat so you do not need to unplug the cruise control wires.
The filter can be removed by unscrewing the 4 screws on the top of the filter box,about a 5 minute job.
I got mine from Partzilla, part number 11013-1137 for $34.07. It was part of a large order so the shipping was free. Ordered alone, the shipping is $7.95. I believe the K&N filter is around $45.00, but don't quote me on that - NEVER rely upon my memory.

I look at my filter during my annual "winter service" down time.This past winter,the filter was so clean,I just did a quick pass with my shop vac.
I did slightly more cleaning last year,but still did not install the filter I keep on stock.I now have about 15,000 miles on the filter in the bike.

You're right, no K&N air filter. Problem with having two different bikes, get confused over who has what for which. Damn the '70s
Thanks, everyone.... I do not like "trimming" filters because you have a weak spot where trimmed and air may get thru without being filtered more easily = more wear. That's just my opinion tho, I am kinda picky lol.
So no K&N which is ok means no washing no oils, and I see they last a while, prolly why the old owner never replaced - I bet when I open it up will be decent. But their not expensive might just change out with one of those OEM ones for the heck of it. Cannot hurt :) I am looking forward to the Rally Next year - I am 100% going :)

I saw that study a few years ago, it has dissuaded a lot of people I know from using K&N or the likes of many times.

Hello from NJ, I also did not like the idea of cutting and gluing at every filter change. So using the STP air filter , as you see in these photos I fabricated a transition plate. and milling a grove around the perimeter , secured into the stock air box with abs glue.
Now its just a few minuets to change out.

While that looks cool, is the stp (or any "alternative to OEM" filter) that much of an increase in mpg or that better that as long as stock is available, I would not just go with stock? Just curious, and if it is way better to use the newer filters instead of an old ass (but new) stock one, I may just do as you did. My idea is as long as stock is still readily available why not just stick with it?
You will not even notice it.... its such a large filter to begin with on such a small engine.. I got an average of 50mpg before and avg. of 50mpg using the STP. My opinion is that, cutting and gluing adds the risk of debris fouling the carbs . I now have 107,247 miles on this bike , having never removed the carbs. Starts and runs the same as it did when brand new. I use Seafoam from time to time and several times in the season , I drain the carb bowls. I also change the fuel/flt every 25,000 mi.
There are original filters to be found, but keep in mind just how old they are....

I agree, maybe old, but as long as physically they are in good shape, they should provide that "stock perfect seal" and hopefully nothing gets into carbs? IDK?? I guess I am just taking the easy road for now. I actually have not even opened air filter to see what previous owner did - maybe he had it modified already. Just thinking out loud lol.
TBH anyone have some money to invest I bet we can get rich, looking at this thread alone, off makin g "stock" Kawa parts but that are actually aftermarket parts made new by a factory but are done to the exact specs as stock. I.E. making a new air filter that is a stock air filter but made in 2020 not 2002 lol.
Amsoil used to make air filters to fit the vxii. They look just like the K&N filter. Been running the same filter for 20 years now. Just clean & re oil it every few years. You can buy it off me along with all the boxes of parts & tools. Also comes with an '87 vxii.
